#122 Pt 1 – Who Is H.P. Lovecraft?: His Bigotry, Writing Style & The Cthulu Mythos With Scott Weatherly

This week Mike is joined by returning guest Scott Weatherly of the 20th Century Geek podcast and the Stories Out Of Time & Space podcast, to talk about one of the most influential fantasy/horror writers who you may have never heard of; H.P. Lovecraft!

Part 1 of Mike & Scott’s chat starts with Lovecraft’s life including his bigotry, relationships & death, before talking about Lovecraft’s writing style, the realm of Lovecraftian horror that he created including ancient beings like Cthulu, what happened to his works after he died and more!

Parts 1&2 are available now on Patreon in one unsplit episode, but on this standard feed, part 2 of their discussion will be released next week! In part 2, their chat on Lovecraft continues, starting with Alan Moore’s Lovecraftian comic, surviving in Lovecraft’s world, Scott then reads out a short passage from a Lovecraft story, why it’s hard to adapt Lovecraftian stories onto screen, how Scott first got into Lovecraft and many other aspects, so either tune in next week, or support GCC on Patreon!

Some recommendations for starting Lovecraft are; Dagon, From Beyond, The Hound, Rats In The Walls, Horror At Red Hook, Herbert West: Reanimator & The Tomb – Scott recommended picking up the Wordsworth collection called Haunter Of The Dark as a starting point.

S. T. Joshi’s Lovecraft biographies are ones to pick up if you want to know even more about Lovecraft!

#116 Pt 2 – Breaking Down Abstract Ideas: The Causation Of Consciousness & The Fountain Of Existence With Jack Thomas

Jack of the Just Conversations podcast returns for part 2 of the deep dive into the concept of good & evil, consciousness, “the fountain of existence”, identity & more – continuing the very abstract discussion!

So for this week’s part, the conversation on consciousness continues but please be advised on a trigger warning, as rape is mentioned as an example during the discussion. In case you missed it, part 1 of their chat started with the “passive apocalypse” and the polarising political system in America before delving into the main conversation topic; the concept of “good & evil”. Mike & Jack discuss whether “good” or “evil” even exist, as well as the historical retelling of events that alter perception, whether or not intent can affect the “goodness” of an action, religion’s impact of the perception of evil, heaven & hell and consciousness!

#116 Pt 1 – Conceptualising Good, Evil & Identity: Reference Points, Religious Archetypes & The Just Conversation Podcast With Jack Thomas

This week, Mike speaks to Jack of the Just Conversations podcast for a deep dive into the concept of good & evil, identity & more – a very abstract discussion!

Part 1 of their chat starts with the “passive apocalypse” and the polarising political system in America before delving into the main conversation topic; the concept of “good & evil”. Mike & Jack discuss whether “good” or “evil” even exist, as well as the historical retelling of events that alter perception, whether or not intent can affect the “goodness” of an action, religion’s impact of the perception of evil, heaven & hell, consciousness and more!

Part 2 will be out next week on this usual feed (but both parts are already out on Patreon in one full episode) – be advised on a trigger warning, as although their discussion on consciousness continues, rape is mentioned as an example during the discussion. For clarity, the rest of their conversation tackles abtract ideas, the equalisation of the universe, how the universe may have started, the causation of consciousness, the “fountain of existence”, free will & determinism, one’s self and more, so either tune in next week or pop over to Patreon to hear more!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon Special – Ep 1: Hello There, Canon/Legends & The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Hello there! Instead of a standard episode of Genuine Chit-Chat, this week Mike wanted to showcase his new show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon – found on the podcast feed of our friends at Comics In Motion!

This release is both episodes 0 & 1 rolled into one! Episode 0 is where Mike explains what you can expect from SW Comics In Canon going forward along with what “Canon/Legends” in SW is and the timeline of the movies, while episode 1 is about The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic and kyber crystal “bleeding” – this show is for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (we’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon, through the comic-book lens!

Regarding content discussed in Episode 1, for the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested but it’s not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.

If anyone has questions about Star Wars or the show in general, send Mike an email at StarWarsComicsInCanon@outlook.com.
