#222 P2 – Why Is English So Difficult? An Oppressive Language And The Music Of Jane Austen With Tony Farina

Author, educator, podcaster and all-round great guy Tony Farina returns to your feed for part 2 of a special 2 hour long conversation spanning all sorts of topics!

This week is part 2 and Mike & Tony discuss close political voting and political apathy, the importance of language & compassion and then delve back into religion from a moral perspective. They then talk about the journey Tony has been on since his first book; Welcome To Mansfield’s release, the upcoming audiobook, how music had an impact on his writing of the Austen Chronicles and it’s importance to the characters within the novels. Their conversation concludes with what 2024 holds for Tony in the book & podcasting world!

If you missed last week’s release (part 1) the duo began by discussing the idea of recording every waking moment and mobile/cell phone access, before the monarchy comes up including Elizabeth I, II and Mary Queen Of Scots which flows into England’s impact on world religion, the whole bizarre concept of having a Royal Family and the part ends with a “what-if” scenario!

Tony mentioned many things in this conversation including;

Star Wars: Comics In Canon Special – Ep 1: Hello There, Canon/Legends & The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Hello there! Instead of a standard episode of Genuine Chit-Chat, this week Mike wanted to showcase his new show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon – found on the podcast feed of our friends at Comics In Motion!

This release is both episodes 0 & 1 rolled into one! Episode 0 is where Mike explains what you can expect from SW Comics In Canon going forward along with what “Canon/Legends” in SW is and the timeline of the movies, while episode 1 is about The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic and kyber crystal “bleeding” – this show is for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (we’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon, through the comic-book lens!

Regarding content discussed in Episode 1, for the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested but it’s not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.

If anyone has questions about Star Wars or the show in general, send Mike an email at StarWarsComicsInCanon@outlook.com.

#67 – Taking A Short Break To Mexico: A Solo Pod About What’s To Come & Why The Two Week Gap

This week is something a little bit different – as I (Mike) am going to Mexico for 10 days, I wanted to take a break from podcasting so I wouldn’t have to work while away and to ensure I don’t rush any upcoming episodes.

In this episode, I just basically just ramble on for 40 minutes, talking about my trip to Mexico, some of the ins & outs of my podcasting schedule and why I’ve decided to take a break, the episodes to expect once I return, a review of the new Lion King, me guesting on a future episode of The Brave Files, some of the previous episodes I recommend checking out if you’re new to the show, what can be expected from following Genuine Chit-Chat on the usual social media channels and other stuff!

To be clear to any first-time listeners, this is more of a bonus episode to explain to anyone not following on social media that I’ll be away for 2 weeks, why that is and what you can expect going forward, so I’ll speak with you all on Sunday 25th!

In this solo ramble I mentioned a few podcasts to check out including #52 with Bill M of The Church Of Satan, episodes #48 & #65 with Gough, the blind filmmaker from Australia, #54 with Heather of The Brave Files, #63 with Comics In Motion and #24 with my brother Rob, Remembering Our Late Father – all of these can be found in the usual places and while I’m on the break, it’s worth checking out the rest of the back catalogue too!

Last week I spoke with Amanda Steel – an author of novels, poems & short stories, as well as creating a quarterly written media publication called Printed Words and being one half of the Reading In Bed Podcast! In our chat we discussed Amanda’s newest book, First Charge as well as Amanda’s other works, when & why she started writing, why she used the pseudonym “Aleesha Black” for her Lost & Found books, one of the worst dates Amanda has been on and using it as inspiration for “Love, Dates & Other Nightmares”, before talking about what Amanda’s publication “Printed Words” entails, how she gets her writing done. The conversation then moves onto Amanda’s podcast and podcasting in general, before a brief discussion on Amanda’s religious/spiritual views, then talking about different languages, learning to become a better writer and much more!

In this week’s release, Chris & Dave talk why they started a podcast as well as the many other podcasts they’re involved with, including their two new podcasts; The Love Island Cast and The VHS Strikes Back, which leads on to discussions about the flawed brilliance of 80s movies followed by a discussion about Love Island, followed by Chris & Dave’s many other podcasts that are either in hiatus or that there are no plans to revisit – including Chat Footy, a fitness podcast, an MMA podcast, their radio show and many more, enough to make your head spin! In addition to the above, they discuss how much work goes into starting & keeping a podcast going, why they’ve started (& stopped) so many different shows, how their different personalities compliment their show and so much more!

In part 2 of their chat, the guys talk about some slightly more political topics, including people being entitled, how politicians are either in it for themselves or are bumbling idiots, people not compromising & sticking to their own “teams” without considering compromise, followed by a long talk about how Chris & Dave formed a band when they met (with some brilliant band stories), along with some of the more unsettling parts of older movies when watching them with a modern lense, all finished off with Chris & Dave talking about their newest podcast “The VHS Strikes Back” so be sure to tune in to GCC’s feed next week!

Mike guested on the Comics In Motion podcast, episode #75 where they discussed Dredd (2012) – it was a great chat, filled with lots of laughs, so be sure to check these guys out if you haven’t already!

Last episode Mike chatted with “The Queen Of Feeling Fabulous”, Rochele Lawson – she’s a nurse, a podcaster, is a wellbeing & life expert, his written several books and more! Their talk starts with Rochele talking about how she got into nursing and what she achieves with her health & wellbeing practices, followed by the negative experiences she endured as a child which opened her mind to holistic medicine and alternative healthcare, why & what Rochele writes every day, the importance of positivity, why admitting one’s mistakes is important, some challenges Rochele faced being a successful woman at a time where it wasn’t as accepting as today, as well as many other fruitful topics!

#50 – Keeping Fandoms Happy: Franchise Milking, Star Wars & The Death Of Toys R Us With Emotionally 14’s Crazy Train

Happy 50th episode guys! This episode is a milestone for Genuine Chit-Chat so we decided to collaborate with our friends at Emotionally 14’s Crazy Train podcast (for anyone who’s come straight from E14, the chat continues from 4:40)!

In this chat, Mike, Rob & Blake discuss a huge variety of topics but some of the more major ones are; toxic fandoms and what constitutes “milking” a franchise, merchandising, the sad death of Toys R Us, which Star Wars trilogy era is the best thus far, Harry Potter & JK Rowling’s other novels, Nicholas Cage’s acting, minute-by-minute takes of movies, the oversaturation in the podcast market & how much work goes into creating a podcast, Event Horizon and so much more!

This is actually part 2 of the chat and although the chat isn’t linear and topics jump all over the place, we suggest checking out part 1, which can be found on The Crazy Train’s feed!

In part 1, where Genuine Chit-Chat got it’s name and why it was started is spoken about as well as Mike’s YouTube beginnings, a movie discussion around The Meg, Monster Brawl, The Room & Star Wars, late-night double-features, the illustrious laptop burial, a face for the radio and many other topics!

The Crazy Train is one third of the Emotionally 14’s podcasts (along with The E14 Gamecast & Talk Star Wars) and is associated with other great podcasts!

The Left Needs The Right: Brexit, Political Accountability & Minimum Wage – GCC #32 with Dom Fullwood

This week, Dom is back, this time for a discussion about politics; especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more!

As shown by the above, this week is much more of a political podcast than the standard and as Dom & Mike are from England, the political realms of England is what is primarily spoken about, however among this, minimum wage, hard work, a communism, accountability, a sprinkling of American politics and the rapper Akala are all also discussed!

Last week’s chat with Dom was vastly different to this weeks and listing everything they discussed would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook, so be sure to check that one out if you fancy a chat less about politics and more about everything else!

MSN: Aggressive Messenger: “Tomboys”, Old Man Slippers & Pre -Facebook Internet – GCC #31 with Dom Fullwood

This week’s chat is all over the place in all the right ways – there’s no specific genre or topic; just two dudes having a discussion about this, that & everything, including how apparently great it is to drive barefoot?

Dom is the returning guest this week, with a conversation that doesn’t stop bouncing from subject to subject – listing everything would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook.

As well as the above, men’s outfits, clothing and shoes are discussed in a surprising amount of detail, the differences we found in school between boys & girls (including the term “Tomboy”), pizza, dog names and Dom’s great advice “opening a window is free” – these and more are all discussed this week!

Next week Dom is back again, but it’ll be for a more specific discussion about politics, especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more!

Remembering Dad – GCC #24: Father’s Day Special: Our Journey Through The Passing Of Our Father, Stephen Burton w/ Rob Burton

This week’s release is an especially emotional & important release for me (Mike). Today marks Father’s Day in the UK, so I wanted to release something about my father, Stephen Burton, who passed away in May of 2013 of oesophageal cancer.
This episode includes discussions of death of a family member and some details about their death, so please be warned of this sensitive content.
I am joined by my brother Rob (who is 17 years older than me) and we discuss how Dad raised each of us and how he was when he became older, followed by how we both found out about his cancer and how it affected him before his death. We then discuss his death itself and how it affected us and what to do moving forward.

As I state in the intro, this is a very meaningful & quite emotional episode for both myself & Rob but we wanted to show that it’s healthy to speak about these matters and if anyone is going through something similar and wishes to chat, I am more than happy to discuss any of these things in a completely confidential way. If you feel as though speaking about this would be helpful, please contact me in the social media links, or via email, below.
