#222 P2 – Why Is English So Difficult? An Oppressive Language And The Music Of Jane Austen With Tony Farina

Author, educator, podcaster and all-round great guy Tony Farina returns to your feed for part 2 of a special 2 hour long conversation spanning all sorts of topics!

This week is part 2 and Mike & Tony discuss close political voting and political apathy, the importance of language & compassion and then delve back into religion from a moral perspective. They then talk about the journey Tony has been on since his first book; Welcome To Mansfield’s release, the upcoming audiobook, how music had an impact on his writing of the Austen Chronicles and it’s importance to the characters within the novels. Their conversation concludes with what 2024 holds for Tony in the book & podcasting world!

If you missed last week’s release (part 1) the duo began by discussing the idea of recording every waking moment and mobile/cell phone access, before the monarchy comes up including Elizabeth I, II and Mary Queen Of Scots which flows into England’s impact on world religion, the whole bizarre concept of having a Royal Family and the part ends with a “what-if” scenario!

Tony mentioned many things in this conversation including;

The library website https://search.worldcat.org, the TV series Victoria, the podcasts Cover To Cover by Chris Franjola and Mandatory Music & CD by Max Byrne on Comics In Motion, plus the musical artists Eric Hutchinson and Matt Nathanson.

#43 –A High-End Jumble Of Words: Animal’s Other Senses, Age Of Consent & Immortality With TJ Cummings

This week Mike talks with good friend & returning guest of the show; TJ Cummings! Last time she was on (Ep 2), they primarily discussed TJ’s travels around Asia but this time it’s a chat with a whole amalgamation of topics, flitting between several and having a laugh while doing so – this one is definitely for those wanting a fun chat that doesn’t touch on anything specific but has moments of clarity within!

There are far too many topics to count in this episode, but a few things discussed are: immortality, the age of consent** & homosexuality, traumatic events that can affect sexuality, having children/adopting along with what can affect a child’s social behaviour from changes earlier in life, our perception of nature, how wi-fi signals affect bees, the many different senses of animals, how religion & the energy of life intertwine, animal language and so much more (also be sure to look out for Mike’s human/tree metaphor)!

**As mentioned in the intro, TJ says Vatican City has no age of consent, however upon further research, it appears it used to be 12, but is now 18**

In case you missed it, last week Mike spoke with Junior of We The Lifers, an alternative apparel company whose goal is to keep people proud of being “alternative”! Part 1 was about what a “lifer” actually is, as well as many other topics surrounding an alternative lifestyle including heavy music and people’s issues with “screamo”, how the stigma surrounding tattoos & piercings has changed over the years and more, while in part 2 Junior & Mike chat about controversial & drug-related tattoos, the dangers of fame, the ridiculousness of homophobia as well as many other topics within!

MSN: Aggressive Messenger: “Tomboys”, Old Man Slippers & Pre -Facebook Internet – GCC #31 with Dom Fullwood

This week’s chat is all over the place in all the right ways – there’s no specific genre or topic; just two dudes having a discussion about this, that & everything, including how apparently great it is to drive barefoot?

Dom is the returning guest this week, with a conversation that doesn’t stop bouncing from subject to subject – listing everything would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook.

As well as the above, men’s outfits, clothing and shoes are discussed in a surprising amount of detail, the differences we found in school between boys & girls (including the term “Tomboy”), pizza, dog names and Dom’s great advice “opening a window is free” – these and more are all discussed this week!

Next week Dom is back again, but it’ll be for a more specific discussion about politics, especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more!

Polari: The Secret Gay Language – Being Born Gay, Name Changes & Gender Identity In Sports: GCC #29 Part 2 with Steve Maidment

This week Mike continues his chat with his friend Steve Maidment, a homosexual man who opens up about his life, how the world has been changing and his opinions on the LGBTQ+ community!

In this week’s release, Steve & Mike discuss whether someone is born gay or if there are other factors that can dictate sexuality, as well as discussing “Polari” – the “gay language” used when homosexuality was illegal, as well as Steve’s youth work with Breakout & City Reach. They then go off on a tangent about names and whether or not they’d change their own names and if so, what to, followed by them getting back on topic and finishing off the talk by speaking about offensive pronouns, gender fluidity, how/if gender should play a role in contact sports (such as MMA), the treatment of women, how far society has come in the last 30 years and much more!

In part 1 (released last week), Steve detailed what it was like growing up gay in the 80s and when/how he realised he wasn’t heterosexual (when at that time it wasn’t discussed at all), bullying & acceptance, Steve’s experiences in college and his coming out story to both his college friends and his parents and being worried about reputation/acceptance when doing so.
As well as the above, sexism, racism, bigotry, prejudice, equality, Brighton and “The Gay Agenda” are all also mentioned, so in case you missed it, be sure to check part 1 out!

The last episode of GCC had the return of our favourite palaeontologist/author Wayne Telford, along with Josh (the co-host of “Science, But Simple”), where they discuss religion & faith, along with some crazy land, water and extinct animals in another science-y addition of Genuine Chit-Chat!

Without Change, You’ll Go Extinct – Religion/Faith, Consciousness & Astonishing Animals: GCC #28 w/ Wayne Telford & Josh Murray

Amazing animals, religion & faith (along with street preaching), misconceptions of the velociraptor and so much more is discussed this week of Genuine Chit-Chat!

Following on from last week’s return of our favourite palaeontologist/author Wayne Telford, along with Josh (the co-host of “Science, But Simple”), although this episode delves into different topical territory.
Religion & faith are discussed, as well as morality of religion, Josh, Wayne & Mike then each discuss their views on consciousness and the afterlife, followed by some notable animals, including water-dwelling, land-dwelling and extinct creatures – so anyone who’s interested in learning about some cool new animals and some of the crazy things they do, this podcast will be right up your street!

Last week they discussed what superpowers would be the most ideal to use in a realistic (less vigilante-like) sense and which ones they think they’d get if they were a fictional character. As well as the above, they talk about human culling & utilitarianism, mentioning Thanos’ idea of balance and how, or if, it could work, followed by opinions on assisted suicide, “anti-natalism”, abortion and stem-cells.

Last week was technically part 1 of this chat, but we are having them as two separate podcast episodes as each part is strong enough to be its own standalone episode (we think)!
