#214 – Attack Of The Clones Reviewed & A Quiz! A Questionable Romance, Sifo Dias, Lightsaber Duels & The Clone Wars With Dave & Maff

This week brings yet another Star Wars conversation, where Dave, Maff & Mike bring you their thoughts on Attack Of The Clones! Three episodes serve as a soft lead into the Clone Wars animated series; this, the Phantom Menace chat and the upcoming Clone Wars movie review! The debate continues on the quality of the prequels as we draw nearer to the animated series that changed Star Wars forever!

In more detail, the trio discuss their first impressions of Attack Of The Clones and if their views have changed. They then discuss Anakin & Padmé’s somewhat questionable romance, Mike explains the mystery surrounding Sifo Dias & the clone army, the Geonosis battle, the finale lightsaber duel, what could be improved and how the film compares to The Phantom Menace. Plus Maff has put together a quiz for Mike & Dave to do – play along and tell us how you did!

Darth Vader Rides A Podracer Through A Sandstorm! Plus He Saves Sabé & Fights Crimson Dawn (Darth Vader [2020] #24-29) – Ep 119

DARTH VADER’S PATH IS UNCLEAR AS HE SAVES PADMÉ’S LOOKALIKE & HANDMAIDEN; SABÉ! For ep 119, Mike delves into 6 issues of Greg Pak’s Darth Vader run, set after Crimson Reign, where Vader & Sabé pursue an imperial governor working with Crimson Dawn and along the way Vader meets two people from his childhood on Tatooine. Palpatine also meets & tests Sabé and when the other handmaidens hear what Sabé has been up to, Dormé is sent to investigate! Mike also provides information on handmaidens and the Iakaru species!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in January 2023.

Darth Vader’s 2020 issues 24-29 were written by Greg Pak. With artwork done by Marco Castiello on issue 24, Raffaele Ienco on 25-28 and Luke Ross on 29. Carlos Lopez is the colour artist for issues 24-28 with Federico Blee on issue 29. Issue 24 of DV 2020 was released June 29th 2022, issue 29 was released November 30th 2022 and the trade paperback collection for issues 23-27 was released January 10th 2023 while the TPB for issues 28-32 is due to be released on June 27th 2023.

The other comic episodes set between Crimson Reign & Hidden Empire are 114 for Bounty Hunters, 115 for Star Wars and 117 for Doctor Aphra. The last Vader issue was tackled in Crimson Reign 5, in ep 110.

In ep 118, Mike delved into the latest of Cavan Scott’s horror comics; Tales From The Rancor Pit, where 3 horror stories from across the Star Wars galaxy are recounted to the gangster Jabba The Hutt! One features haunted droids during the Clone Wars, the second features monster hunter Ty Yorrick during the High Republic era and the last features Han Solo, Leia & Chewbacca dealing with local creatures on Hoth, set shortly before the Empire attack! Mike also gives information on Hassarians, Cereans, Wampas, LEP droids and more!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Halcyon Legacy: The Galactic Starcruiser’s Anthology Stories; From High Republic To Last Jedi, Including Burryaga, Aurra Sing, Hondo Ohnaka, Lando, Anakin, Padmé & More – Ep 105

THE GALACTIC STARCRUISER’S ANTHOLOGY SERIES EMERGES; THE HALCYON LEGACY! In ep 105, Mike delves into 6 stories within 5 comics surrounding the canon cruise ship The Halcyon which span from The High Republic Era all the way up to The Last Jedi, with stories in each of the main eras of the current Star Wars canon! As some pirates try to capture a resistance spy from the ship, stories are told to keep a young girl’s mind off of the havoc, including an adventure with Wookiee padawan Burryaga, bounty hunter Aurra Sing fighting a monster, Maz Kanata working with Hondo Ohnaka & Lando to steal back an artifact, Anakin & Padmé pursue a senator and a man is tracked down by some familiar bounty hunters – all within this exciting episode!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in August 2022.

The main/frame story is set after The Last Jedi but before The Rise of Skywalker, around 34ABY. The subsequent stories are set around phase 1 of the High Republic (230BBY), the clone wars (22-19BBY), the imperial era (10ABY) and near A New Hope (0-1ABY).

Halcyon Legacy was written by Ethan Sacks with Will Sliney as artist and Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist. Issue 1 was released February 2nd 2022, issue 5 was released August 3rd 2022 and the trade paperback collection is due for release November 1st 2022.

Previously, in ep 104, the second batch of Crimson Reign comics were in Mike’s sights, which continues Qi’ra & Crimson Dawn’s efforts to disrupt the Empire’s hold on the galaxy, including Ochi Of Bestoon & Deathstick attack, Aphra continues to search for Ascendant artifacts with Sana Starros, Vader kills suspected Crimson Dawn collaborators, the Bounty Hunter crew searches for 4-LOM and Shara Bey tries to escape the star destroyer Tarkin’s Will without being noticed by the Empire!

WHAT WAS THAT BUSINESS ON CATO NEIMOIDIA? It’s time for another spoiler-free book review and this one is about the recently released Brotherhood by Mike Chen! Set in the first few weeks of the Clone Wars (just after Ep II: Attack Of The Clones) this story delves into the shift in Anakin & Obi-Wan’s relationship once Anakin is promoted from padawan to jedi while also dealing with crisis on Cato Neimoidia (as mentioned in Revenge Of The Sith) plus this book introduces a Clone Wars character, shows what Padmé & Anakin are like when aware from prying eyes as well as much more!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in June 2022.

In more detail, Mike begins by confirming where he book sits in the timeline and provides some background information to the book before providing his spoiler-free thoughts on the book. Mike then gives his thoughts on the themes & characters which features some minor spoilers, Mike then finishes his review by providing more-detailed thoughts on the book and confirms the general plot.

Brotherhood was released May 10th 2022. Mike Chen also wrote the short story Disturbance from A Certain Point Of View (Empire Strikes Back) and the non-Star-Wars book Light Years From Home.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 39: Anakin Freeing Slaves, Mace’s Saber, Padmé’s Mission & Jar Jar Binks (Age Of Republic)

This episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon features the final 4 stories in the Age Of Republic one-shot comic series, all set around the Clone Wars; Anakin Skywalker in “The Sacrifice”, Padmé Amidala in “Bridge”, “The Weapon” with Mace Windu and “501 Plus One” with Rex and Jar Jar Binks, Mike also gives some additional info about each of the characters and recommendations for season 1 of the Clone Wars.

The Age Of Republic comics Anakin Skywalker & Padmé Amidala were both written by Jody Houser, pencilled by Wilton Santos & Cory Smith, inked by Walden Wong (Marc Deering also inked Padmé) and Java Tartaglia was the colourist for both too.

Please note this episode was originally released in January of 2021 on the feed of Comics In Motion.

AoR Special was released in January 2019, AoR Anakin was released February 2019 and AoR Padmé was released March 2019. The AoR Heroes trade paperback was released in May 2019 while the AoR hardcover (with heroes & villains) was released February 2020.

If you want to get into the animated Clone Wars series (on Disney+), skip the movie and watch episodes 5, 9-12 and 19-22. Season 2 onwards is much better than season 1, so you can watch all CW episodes from there!

For the other Age Of Republic stories, check out episodes; 2 for Maul, 26 for Dooku, 31 for Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon and 35 for Jango Fett, Grievous & Asajj Ventress.
