Star Wars Visions Special: What Came Before The Duel? Prequel Comic: The Ronin, The Shogun & Battle Scars – Ep 124

WHAT DID THE WANDERING RONIN DO BEFORE THE DUEL? For ep 124 (& April Fool’s Day), this episode is technically not “canon” as it takes place in a Star Wars Visions continuity, more specifically, The Duel. This comic is a prequel to The Duel animated episode, which is also linked to the Ronin novel. Mike explores The Ronin’s story, confirms connections along the way and gives his interpretations to the ending.

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in April 2023.

Star Wars: Visions 1 was released on October 12th 2022 and it was written by Takashi Okazaki, who also did the artwork and the colours. Aki Yanagi did the English translation and the book Ronin was written by Emma Mieko Candon.

Mike, Megan, Ria & JAC discussed all 9 episodes of Star Wars Visions Season 1 here: https://pod.fo/e/100f26

Previously, in ep 123, Mike continued with the final chapter of the Qi’ra trilogy along with the Bounty Hunters & Aphra comic crossovers! As Chanath Cha finally confronts Vader for 2 decades of revenge, Aphra learns even more from the Spark Eternal and gets more than she bargained for! Plus Beilert Valance also takes issue with Vader & The Empire’s lies so tries to fight the Sith Lord one-on-one in an act of pure anger, but as we know Vader’s fate, what will happen to those who challenge the Sith Lord – will they live to tell the tale?

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in February 2022. Mike tackled the first volume of High Republic comics (by Cavan Scott) in episode 84 of SWCIC and the first volume of HR Adventures comics (by Daniel José Older) in episode 86 of SWCIC.

Mike’s High Republic book reviews are found on Comics In Motion’s feed and on Mike’s YouTube: Light Of The Jedi was released March 13th 2021, A Test Of Courage: August 14th 2021, Into The Dark: October 2nd 2021 and The Rising Storm was released November 13th 2021. Race To Crashpoint Tower was out last week (February 6th 2022) and Out Of The Shadows will be released later in 2022.

Check out the last episode of SWCIC, which was another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era, continuing with the second wave (of the first phase) with Race To Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older – the junior novel which runs parallel to the “adult” novel, The Rising Storm, with a bunch of new and familiar characters!

For ep 60 of SWCIC, Mike embarks on the first 5 issues of the War Of The Bounty Hunters 34-issue crossover event, which this month form “the prelude”! This story takes place just after Empire Strikes Back; carbonite-frozen Han Solo is stolen from Boba Fett on his way to collecting the bounty from Jabba The Hutt and now the whole galaxy is after Solo, including Luke & Chewie, Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra, Beilert Valance, Dengar and many other bounty hunters – this is the crossover event of the decade, so is not one to be missed!

This story is set just after Empire Strikes Back (& after the first runs of the Star Wars, Darth Vader & Doctor Aphra comics) and the reading order is WoBH Alpha>SW13>BH12>DV12>DA10.

WoBH Alpha was released 5th May 2021, it written by Charles Soule with Steve McNiven as artist and Laura Martin as colour artist. SW13 was released 12th May 2021, it was written by Charles Soule with Ramon Rosanas as artist and Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist. BH12 was released 19th May 2021, it written by Ethan Sacks with Paolo Villanelli as artist and Arif Prianto as colour artist. DA10 was released 26th May 2021, it written by Alyssa Wong with Ray-Anthony Heigh as penciller, Victor Olazaba as inker and Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist.

Please note this episode was originally released in June of 2021 on the feed of Comics In Motion.

Check out the last episode of SWCIC where Mike embarked on the penultimate Doctor Aphra story-arc from the 2016 run; The Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon! In addition to detailing what this superweapon is, these issues give backstory to Aphra’s relationship with her mother and shows a huge amount of trickery & madness (as standard with Aphra), plus Mike gives information on RA-7 protocol droids, Gigorans, the Empire’s Gallery Of Peace and more!

Spider-Dan himself!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 0: Hello There!

Hello there and welcome to Star Wars: Comics In Canon; your guide to the wider Star Wars canon through the comic-book lens! I’m your host Mike Burton – you may know me from the Genuine Chit-Chat podcast and for being the one with the abundance of Star Wars facts in the collaboration between Comics In Motion, 20th Century Geek & Genuine Chit-Chat in the journey to the Rise Of Skywalker! This release is just to outline what you can expect from these Saturday-slotted episodes on Comics In Motion’s fine feed (& on GCC’s YouTube) – it’s for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (I’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon!

I’ll be doing an episode each week about a character, an event, a series of comics or something similar, talking about which comics are worth checking out, general plot points from them as well as some trivia and news – this show is recommended for those who have seen all 9 episodes of Star Wars as well as Solo & Rogue One. If you’ve seen Clone Wars & Rebels too, that helps but is definitely not a requirement.

In this episode I also explain what Canon & Legends means in Star Wars, what the calendar regarding the battle of Yavin (BBY/ABY) means, a timeline of all current movies & series, a brief overview of what The High Republic era is, as well as giving a general overview on the comics/episodes to come.

The first “proper” episode will be releasing shortly and I am more than happy to take any & all criticism or notes to ensure this is the best podcast it can be, so if you have any questions, pointers or just fancy a chat, send me an email at StarWarsComicsInCanon@outlook.com!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon Special – Ep 1: Hello There, Canon/Legends & The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Hello there! Instead of a standard episode of Genuine Chit-Chat, this week Mike wanted to showcase his new show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon – found on the podcast feed of our friends at Comics In Motion!

This release is both episodes 0 & 1 rolled into one! Episode 0 is where Mike explains what you can expect from SW Comics In Canon going forward along with what “Canon/Legends” in SW is and the timeline of the movies, while episode 1 is about The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic and kyber crystal “bleeding” – this show is for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (we’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon, through the comic-book lens!

Regarding content discussed in Episode 1, for the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested but it’s not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.

If anyone has questions about Star Wars or the show in general, send Mike an email at StarWarsComicsInCanon@outlook.com.

Next week will be back to the usual GCC shows, so if you’re not into Star Wars, check in next week!

Chris & Dave of Comics In Motion were on episodes 63 & 75 of Genuine Chit-Chat and Mike was on episodes 75 & 100 of Comics In Motion!
