#214 – Attack Of The Clones Reviewed & A Quiz! A Questionable Romance, Sifo Dias, Lightsaber Duels & The Clone Wars With Dave & Maff

This week brings yet another Star Wars conversation, where Dave, Maff & Mike bring you their thoughts on Attack Of The Clones! Three episodes serve as a soft lead into the Clone Wars animated series; this, the Phantom Menace chat and the upcoming Clone Wars movie review! The debate continues on the quality of the prequels as we draw nearer to the animated series that changed Star Wars forever!

In more detail, the trio discuss their first impressions of Attack Of The Clones and if their views have changed. They then discuss Anakin & Padmé’s somewhat questionable romance, Mike explains the mystery surrounding Sifo Dias & the clone army, the Geonosis battle, the finale lightsaber duel, what could be improved and how the film compares to The Phantom Menace. Plus Maff has put together a quiz for Mike & Dave to do – play along and tell us how you did!

Star Wars 2020: How Luke Found His Kyber Crystal & Lando’s Attack on Coruscant, Plus Crystal Purifying, Ilum & The Fallanassi (SW2020: Vol 6: Quest Of The Force #34-36) – Ep 140

HOW DID LUKE OBTAIN HIS GREEN LIGHTSABER CRYSTAL? For ep 140, Mike continues with the 2020 run of main Star Wars comics, where we find out how Luke obtained his iconic green kyber crystal and learn more about kyber crystals & purification along the way, all while Leia plans for a group of rebels, including Lando & Chewie, to attack a very specific location on the surface of Imperial centre, on Coruscant! Plus Mike talks about the planets of Ilum & Christophsis, the Fallanassi and more!

Star Wars 34-36 were all written by Charles Soule with Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist and for issues 34 & 35, Madibek Musabekov was artist while Andrea Di Vito was artist for issue 36. Issue 34 was released May 3^rd 2023, issue 36 was released July 4^th 2023 and the trade paperback collection was released 26th September 2023.

In the last episode, YODA MUST MAKE PEACE WITH HIS PAST AND RE-ENTER THE DARK SIDE CAVE! In ep 139, Mike continues with the Yoda series by delving into the second half. Star Wars: Comics In Canon – SW 2020: Stuck In No Space, Searching For The Kezarat Convoy, Plus Amilyn Holdo, The Nihil, Abyssians & More (Star Wars [2020] Vol 6: 30-33) – Ep 138

THE REBELS ARE TRAPPED IN NO SPACE, HOW WILL THEY ESCAPE? For ep 138, Mike delves back into the main run of Star Wars comics from 2020, where Chewie, Holdo, Lando, Leia, Lobot & Luke search for the Kezarat Convoy by using a High-Republic-era Nihil path engine and find themselves in trouble! In addition to the comic’s plot, Mike delves into a bit of information regarding the High Republic, Amilyn Holdo, Abyssians and more!

Star Wars 30-33 were all written by Charles Soule with Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist and for issues 30 & 31, Andrés Genolet was artist while Madibek Musabekov was artist for issues 32 & 33. Issue 30 was released January 4th 2023, issue 33 was released April 5th 2023 and the trade paperback collection was released 26th September 2023.

Star Wars: Comics In Motion – Porter Engle Is The Blade Of Bardotta: The Greatest Swordsman’s Origin Story, His Sister And The Barash Vow (The Blade #1-4) – High Republic Phase 2, Wave 1 – Ep 130

THE BLADE OF BARDOTTA’S ORIGIN STORY! For ep 130, Mike delves into the 4-part mini-series surrounding Porter Engle; an Ikkrukkian Jedi who lives throughout the High Republic (around 300 years old during Phase 1). In Phase 1, he is a talented cook with a dark past so in Phase 2, we delve into The Blade’s past and find out about the Barash Vow, while along the way meeting Porter’s sister and seeing more of the Republic during it’s more exploratory age!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in June 2023.

The Blade 1 was released December 28th 2022, issue 4 was released March 29th 2023 and the trade paperback collection is due for release June 27th 2023. The Blade was written by Charles Soule, with Marco Castiello as artist on issues 1-3 and Jethro Morales on issues 2-4, while Jim Charalampidis is colour artist on issues 1 & 2 and Jim Campbell is colour artist on issues 3 & 4.

As The Blade takes place in Phase 2 of The High Republic (approx. 150 years before Phase 1), it is in 382 BBY.

Mike has tackled all of Phase 1 of The High Republic and has released episodes on the books of Wave 1. The episodes were released; Path Of Deceit on 7th Jan, Quest For Hidden City on February 14th, Convergence on March 18th and The Battle Of Jedha on April 22nd, with the first volume/wave of phase 2 comics being tacked in episode 126 (out May 13th 2023).

In episode 129, Mike answers the question; AS THE HIDDEN EMPIRE ENDS, WHAT ARE QI’RA AND DOCTOR APHRA’S FATES? He delves into the final issue of Hidden Empire; ending the Qi’ra trilogy, plus Aphra issues 30 & 31 bring an end to the Spark Eternal story arc! Mike delves into the plot of these final comic issues, while providing connections along the way, to provide the exciting conclusion to these comics!

What Is Star Wars Revelations? Vader’s Vision Of The Future; A Droid Threat In Ajax Sigma, Doctor Aphra, Luke’s Lightsaber Crystal & More (Star Wars Revelations 1) – Ep 120

DARTH VADER HAS A VISION OF THE FUTURE, SHOWING THE RESURRECTION OF AN ANCIENT DROID THREAT! For ep 120, Mike delves into the one-shot special by Marc Guggenheim which stretches across all ongoing runs of Star Wars comics (excluding The High Republic) to give an idea of what new threat is looming during & after the Hidden Empire crossover event. Vader sees many potential futures thanks to the Eye Of The Webbish Bog, but what do these futures all mean and can Vader change any of them? This is a must-listen for fans of the 2020 runs of Star Wars, Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra and Bounty Hunters comics!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in February 2023.

Star Wars Revelations 1 was released November 23rd 2022 and was written by Marc Guggenheim. Guru eFX & Dono Sánchez-Almara are the colour artists, while Salvador Larroca, Pere Perez, Emma Kubert, Justin Mason, Paul Fry & Wayne Faucher are all pencil/ink artists who worked on the comic.

The other comic episodes set between Crimson Reign & Hidden Empire are 114 for Bounty Hunters, 115 for Star Wars, 117 for Doctor Aphra, 119 for Darth Vader and Crimson Reign 5 was tackled in ep 110. Also listen to episode 81 of SWCIC for the story how Fortress Vader was built!

Last episode, Quest For The Hidden City was the focus, where Mike provided an overview of Phase 2 of The High Republic, including how it differs from Phase 1 and what Pathfinder teams are, before providing his spoiler-free thoughts on the novel. HOW DID KYLO REN GET HIS RED LIGHTSABER AND WHAT HAPPENED TO LUKE’S JEDI TEMPLE? In ep 109, Mike delves into the archives to redo the four Rise Of Kylo Ren comics, giving much more information than when he tackled it previously (in episode 1, over 2.5 years ago), including connections to The High Republic, the 2020 Star Wars comics, the 2017 Darth Vader comics, Crimson Reign and gives much more information on the Knights Of Ren! He also delves into the process of bleeding a lightsaber crystal and explains how Kylo got his iconic lightsaber from the sequel trilogy!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in October 2022.

This comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY), approximately 6 years before the events of The Force Awakens.

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue 1 was released December 2019, issue 4 released March 2020 and the trade paperback collection was released August 2020.

In ep 108, Mike delved into the fourth batch of Crimson Reign comics, where the infamous Knights Of Ren (& their leader before Kylo) attempt to steal a key from Darth Vader while the Crimson Dawn conspiracy continues to plunge the galaxy into chaos. Star Wars: Comics In Canon – THR: Jedi & Nihil Parallel Stories, Lightsaber Forms & New Characters, Introducing Lula Talisola, Zeen Mrala, Young Yoda & More (High Republic Adventures [2020] Vol 1: #1-5, Phase 1, Wave 1) – Ep 86

TWO FRIENDS; ONE TAKEN BY NIHIL, ONE TAKEN BY JEDI – PARALLEL PLOT-LINES AFOOT! Mike starts episode 86 with some background information on The High Republic as well as Daniel José Older’s other Star Wars works, before delving into the first volume of High Republic Adventures comics! As well as confirming the plot of the comics, which detail padawan Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala’s respective journeys, Krix’s fall into the Nihil and more, including what a 664 year-old Yoda is up to! Mike also gives a summary on the 7 lightsaber forms for combat (between the 10 & 17 minute mark), and then throughout the episode talks about species including Chagrian, Mikkian, Zygerrian & more (including the mysterious Savrip) as well as many more connections these comics have to the rest of the Star Wars Universe!

These High Republic comics are set in 232BBY, in the first phase & first wave of the High Republic.

The High Republic Adventures 1 was released 3rd February 2021, issue 5 was released June 16th 2021 and the trade paperback collection was released November 16th 2021. Daniel José Older is the writer of these comics, with Harvey Tolibao as artist and Rebecca Nalty as the colour artist. Pow Rodrix also helped with the art on issues 2 & 5 and Manuel Bracchi also helped on issue 5.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Luke Searches For Lightsaber & Returns To Cloud City While Lando Searches For Lobot, Plus Pathfinders, Ugnaughts, Weequay & More (Star Wars [2020] Vol 1: The Destiny Path #1-6) – Ep 73

In ep 73, Mike embarks on the first volume of the 2020 main Star Wars run, set moments after the end of Empire Strikes Back! Luke searches for his lost lightsaber, so heads back to Cloud City with Leia & R2-D2, plus Lando returns searching for an old friend, all while the group evade the pursuing Empire! Mike goes through the plot & gives plenty of details to other connections including the Pathfinders, Ugnaughts, Weequay and more!

This story is set just after Empire Strikes Back (& after the first run of the Star Wars, but before the War Of the Bounty Hunters crossover). The writer for these comics is Charles Soule, Jesús Saiz was the artist, plus Jesús Saiz was the co-colour artist on issues 1 & 6, with Arif Prianto as colour artist on issues 1-6, with Rachelle Rosenberg assisting on issue 4 and Dan Brown assisting on issue 5.

Issue 1 was released January 2020, Issue 6 was released September 2020 and the trade paperback collection was released November 2020.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Vader Vs Jocasta Nu & The Lightsaber Rifle, Plus The Grand Inquisitor, Bounty Hunters & Force-Sensitive Children (Darth Vader [2017] Vol 2: #7-12) – Ep 66

For ep 66, it’s time for another volume of 2017 Darth Vader and this time, Jocasta Nu is in the Sith Lord’s sights! Mike tackles the next story set just after Revenge Of The Sith where Vader pursues the jedi archivist; Jocastu Nu as she possesses an object that could bring the Empire toppling down, plus Vader is attacked by mercenaries & bounty hunters, so goes up the chain to find out who put the hit on him… Mike also gives additional information on inquisitors, ancient artifacts, a lightsaber rifle and more!

These comics are set just after Revenge Of The Sith, in 19 BBY.

All issues were written by Charles Soule, with Giuseppe Camuncoli as penciller, Daniele Orlandini as inker and David Curiel as colour artist. Issue 7 was released November 2017, issue 12 was released February 2018, the trade paperback collection was released April 2018 and the hardcover of volumes 1&2 was released October 2018. The omnibus with all 2017 Vader comics will be released October 2021.

Mike tackled the first volume of 2017 Vader in ep 62 of SWCIC. For the 2015 Vader run (set after A New Hope), check out episodes 15, 17, 19, 23 & 29 of SWCIC, plus ep 41 features the Vader: Dark Visions anthology mini-series and ep 49 is the Target Vader mini-series.

For Ep 62, Mike embarks on the first arc in the 2017 Darth Vader series; arguably his favourite Star Wars comic of the new canon! In this story, Vader struggles with his new suit, fights the jedi warrior Kirak as well as the Grand Inquisitor, obtains his new lightsaber, bleeds the kyber crystal and more! Mike also gives information on jedi starfighters, Mas Amedda, Mustafar’s history, holocrons, royal guards and more connective tissue within this comic.

These comics are set just after Revenge Of The Sith, in 19 BBY.

#162 Pt 2 – Who Do We Want In The Kenobi Show? Lightsaber Screentime, Other Disney+ Shows & Having Realistic Expectations With Ben of Star Wars Timeline

This week, Mike continues his discussion with Ben of Star Wars Timeline, about the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, the character himself and much more!

This week is part 2 of their chat and the duo’s discussion continues with their view on the importance of the series, which characters they’d like to see (& not see) and of how much screentime they have. They also compare the show to the previous Star Wars & Marvel shows on Disney+, their concerns for the show, how people should approach the show and more!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 1: The Rise Of Kylo Ren & Kyber Crystal Bleeding

In this episode of Star Wars: Comics in Canon, Mike talks about the four-part comic series about Kylo Ren, delving into more details of what happened at Luke’s jedi temple, Kylo’s relationship with Snoke, the Knights Of Ren, Mike explains what “bleeding” a kyber crystal (lightsaber) is and more!

For the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, and while seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested, it is not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.
