#222 P2 – Why Is English So Difficult? An Oppressive Language And The Music Of Jane Austen With Tony Farina

Author, educator, podcaster and all-round great guy Tony Farina returns to your feed for part 2 of a special 2 hour long conversation spanning all sorts of topics!

This week is part 2 and Mike & Tony discuss close political voting and political apathy, the importance of language & compassion and then delve back into religion from a moral perspective. They then talk about the journey Tony has been on since his first book; Welcome To Mansfield’s release, the upcoming audiobook, how music had an impact on his writing of the Austen Chronicles and it’s importance to the characters within the novels. Their conversation concludes with what 2024 holds for Tony in the book & podcasting world!

If you missed last week’s release (part 1) the duo began by discussing the idea of recording every waking moment and mobile/cell phone access, before the monarchy comes up including Elizabeth I, II and Mary Queen Of Scots which flows into England’s impact on world religion, the whole bizarre concept of having a Royal Family and the part ends with a “what-if” scenario!

Tony mentioned many things in this conversation including;

The library website https://search.worldcat.org, the TV series Victoria, the podcasts Cover To Cover by Chris Franjola and Mandatory Music & CD by Max Byrne on Comics In Motion, plus the musical artists Eric Hutchinson and Matt Nathanson.

Also the books; The Circle by Dave Eggers, Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, Lamb by Christopher Moore and The Future Of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler. The article I Don’t Want To Be Right by Maria Konnikova: https://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/i-dont-want-to-be-right

Tony has been on GCC numerous times, the last two were episodes 195 (introducing his first Jane Austen Novel) and 219 (for Buffy Revisited).

#63 Pt 2 – From Stage To Podcast: Band Politics, Following Leaders & Aging 80s Movies With Comics In Motion

This week Mike’s chat with the boys from Comics In Motion is continued where they talk about how Chris & Dave met, a brief discussion on their views on today’s political landscape and a bit of talk about 80s movies, all with many laughs in-between!

In a bit more detail, the guys talk about people being entitled, how politicians seem to be bumbling idiots half the time, the lack of people not compromising & sticking to their own political “teams” without considering other’s views, followed by a long talk about how Chris & Dave formed a band when they met & eventually disbanded (with some brilliant band stories in-between), along with some of the more unsettling parts of older movies when watching them with a modern lense, all finished off with Chris & Dave talking about their newest podcast “The VHS Strikes Back”!

Last week in part 1, Chris & Dave talk why they started a podcast as well as the many other podcasts they’re involved with, including their two new podcasts; The Love Island Cast and The VHS Strikes Back, which leads on to discussions about the flawed brilliance of 80s movies followed by a discussion about Love Island, followed by Chris & Dave’s many other podcasts that are either in hiatus or that there are no plans to revisit – including Chat Footy, a fitness podcast, an MMA podcast, their radio show and many more, enough to make your head spin! In addition to the above, they discuss how much work goes into starting & keeping a podcast going, why they’ve started (& stopped) so many different shows, how their different personalities compliment their show and so much more!

This week, is part 2 of Mike’s chat with the powerful Hedley Knights, who as well as being the producer/sound engineer, he voices Jault for the podcast audio drama We Fix Space Junk and is a co-founder of Battlebird Productions!

Part 2 hosts a much more varied discussion than part 1, as although the chat starts with Hedley speaking about audio dramas, the topic soon moves onto movies, followed by a whole range of things including the damage of toxic masculinity, the representation of different races & sexualities in the media, black lives matter, capitalism, understanding negative behaviour, freedom of speech, stereotypes, Star Trek and so much more before circling back and discussing Marilyn’s Diary (a WFSJ mini-series)!

In case you missed it, in part 1 they discussed how WFSJ all began, the inspirations for it, bonus content and who the “Automnivoice” is, they discuss a whole mess of other things, so even if you’re not a fan of We Fix Space Junk, it’s still an incredibly listen!

The Left Needs The Right: Brexit, Political Accountability & Minimum Wage – GCC #32 with Dom Fullwood

This week, Dom is back, this time for a discussion about politics; especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more!

As shown by the above, this week is much more of a political podcast than the standard and as Dom & Mike are from England, the political realms of England is what is primarily spoken about, however among this, minimum wage, hard work, a communism, accountability, a sprinkling of American politics and the rapper Akala are all also discussed!

Last week’s chat with Dom was vastly different to this weeks and listing everything they discussed would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook, so be sure to check that one out if you fancy a chat less about politics and more about everything else!

Promo by American Slacker

Two episodes back was a two-part gaming chat with Josh & Rhys as guests, talking about some of the games they have loved and some of the issues with today’s gaming industry – one to definitely check out for the videogamers among you!
