Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Hidden Empire Finale & The Spark Eternal: Qi’ra’s Reign Ends & Aphra Gets Stabbed (HE5 & Doctor Aphra 30 & 31) – Ep 129

AS THE HIDDEN EMPIRE ENDS, WHAT ARE QI’RA AND DOCTOR APHRA’S FATES? For ep 129, Mike delves into the final issue of Hidden Empire; ending the Qi’ra trilogy, plus Aphra issues 30 & 31 bring an end to the Spark Eternal story arc! Mike delves into the plot of these final comic issues, while providing connections along the way, to provide the exciting conclusion to these comic issues, with hints of what’s to come!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in June 2023.

Hidden Empire 5 was released April 5th 2023, was written by Charles Soule, with Steven Cummings as penciller, Victor Olazaba & Wayne Faucher as inkers and Guru eFX as colour artist. The trade paperback of all 5 Hidden Empire issues is due for release July 4th 2023. Doctor Aphra 30 was released April 12th 2023, DA 31 was released May 3rd 2023, the trade paperback collection for DA is due for release August 1st 2023 and both issues were written by Alyssa Wong with artist Minkyu Jung and colour artist Rachelle Rosenberg.

For Hidden Empire 1, 2, 3 & 4, check episodes 121, 122, 123 & 127. The comic episodes set between Crimson Reign & Hidden Empire are 114 for Bounty Hunters, 115 for Star Wars, 117 for Doctor Aphra, 119 for Darth Vader, and Crimson Reign 5 was tackled in ep 110!

The last episode was 128 which was the 40th anniversary of Return Of The Jedi and where Mike delves into the first 3 comics (of 8) that tie-in with Return Of The Jedi; Jabba’s Palace, Ewoks & Lando, but this episode was uploaded to the feed weeks ago (when it was the 40th anniversary), so the last episode on this feed was technically 127, which was Hidden Empire 4.

Star Wars: Midnight Horizon By Daniel José Older Book Review & Plot Overview – Reath Silas, Kantam Sy, Cohmac Vitus, Ram Jomaram, Corellia, Nihil & More – High Republic Phase 1’s End (Wave 3)

This ep is the final spoiler-free book review from Phase 1 of the High Republic era; the young adult novel Midnight Horizon by Daniel José Older! As with all of Mike’s book reviews, he starts by giving his spoiler-free thoughts, then provides some minor plot details and confirms the book’s themes & the characters, then nearer the end he provides a brief description of the whole plot, confirming characters who appear, more detailed arcs, and more spoiler-y information! He also provides his full ranking of all 9 High Republic books. This review is perfect for any fans of The High Republic!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – A Rogue’s End And How Aphra Saved The Rebellion – Finale (Doctor Aphra [2016] Vol 6: #37-40, Annual 3 & Empire Ascendant) – Ep 63

For ep 63, Mike embarks on the final arc of the 2016 run of Doctor Aphra comics; A Rogue’s End including the Epilogue from Empire Ascendant and Doctor Aphra Annual 3. In this arc Aphra confronts Vader for one last time, explores ancient jedi ruins, gets some closure from both Tolvan and her dad Korin, meets Triple-Zero & BT1 with their memories erased and so much more! Annual 3 is a story involving Winloss & Nokk, a peculiar human/trandoshan couple who appears in Aphra 30 and Black Krrsantan even makes an appearance!

These comics are set just before Empire Strikes Back, around 3 ABY.

They were all written by Simon Spurrier – Aphra 37-40 & the epilogue had Caspar Wijngaard as the artist with Lee Loughridge as colour artist, while Annual 3 had Elsa Charretier as artist with Edgar Delgado & Jim Campbell as colour artists.

Issue 37 & Annual 3 were released in October 2019, issue 40 & Empire Ascendant were released December 2019 and the trade paperback collection was released February 2020.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 29: Darth Vader’s First Finale And The End Of Games (Darth Vader #20-25)

In this episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon, Mike tackled the fourth and final volume of the first run of Darth Vader comics; End Of Games, for the conclusion to the 25-issue epic! Included in this episode is the clone Cylo’s betrayal of the Empire, Vader’s Mustafar-based force vision, whale ships, super star destroyers, an enhanced rancor, some background on the rancor trainer Malakili, Doctor Aphra meeting Palpatine and much more!

In case you haven’t listened to the previous Vader episodes, check out episodes 15, 17, 19 & 23, for the full details of the first run of Darth Vader comics (by Kieron Gillen)! 

The 6 issues of vol 4 of Darth Vader were written by Kieron Gillen with the artist Salvador Larroca and colourist Edgar Delgado. Issue #20 was released May 2016, issue #25 was released October 2016, the trade paperback collection was released December 2016 and the full Darth Vader Omnibus was released September 2017. 

Included within End Of Games are two “mini-comics” both also written by Kieron Gillen; “The Misadventures of Triple-Zero and Beetee” has Mike Norton as the artist and David Curriel as colourist and “Coda” has Max Fiumara as the artist and Dave Stewart as the colourist. 

Last week, episode 28 brought the very first book review on Star Wars: Comics In Canon, all about Claudia Gray’s Master & Apprentice; a book set years before The Phantom Menace, focusing on Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi’s relationship and their mission on Pijal, along with flashbacks giving insight into Qui-Gon’s relationship with his master Dooku and 6 prophecies including the infamous Chosen One prophecy!
