Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 59: The Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon (Doctor Aphra #32-36)

In this episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon, Mike embarks on the penultimate Doctor Aphra story-arc from the 2016 run; The Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon! In addition to detailing what this superweapon is, these issues give backstory to Aphra’s relationship with her mother and shows a huge amount of trickery & madness (as standard with Aphra), plus Mike gives information on RA-7 protocol droids, Gigorans, some of the artifacts in the Empire’s Gallery Of Peace and more of the connecting tissue between this story & the rest of the Star Wars universe!

At the end of this episode Mike gives information on next week’s episode, War Of The Bounty Hunters, as well as what you can expect from SWCIC over the coming months.

These comics are set between A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back, after all 2015 Vader comics.

These comics were all written by Simon Spurrier, Chris O’Halloran was the colour artist on all issues (with Stephane Paitreau on 32-34) Pencillers were; Wilton Santos on all issues bar 35 with Andrea Broccardo on 33-35, Caspar Wijngaard on 32 & 33 and Cris Bolson on 34 & 36. Inkers were: Marc Deering on issues 32-35, Walden Wong was on 33, 34 & 36 with Don Ho on issue 32 and Scott Hanna on issue 35.

Issue 32 was released in May 2019, issue 36 was released September 2019 and the trade paperback collection was released December 2019.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 58: Caleb Dume/Kanan Jarrus; Padawan Of The Clone Wars (Kanan #7-12, First Blood)

In this episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon, Mike embarks on the second half of the 12-issue Kanan comics run; First Blood! This story-arc shows flashbacks of Kanan’s time as a youngling in the Jedi temple, his relationship with his master Depa Billaba and his first missions in the clone wars along with a “present day” story set around season 1 of Star Wars Rebels! Mike also talks about Bacta, Jedi temple guards, Fenn Rau and many more connections within this comic run!

The flashbacks in these comics are set around 19 BBY (end of the Clone Wars, before Revenge Of The Sith) while the “present day” story is set around 4/5 BBY (a few years before Rogue One).

Please note this episode was originally released in June of 2021 on the feed of Comics In Motion.

These comics were all written by Greg Weisman, with David Curiel as colour artist and Pepe Larraz as artist on issues 7-11 and Andrea Broccardo as artist on issue 12.

Issue 7 was released in October 2015, issue 12 was released March 2016, the trade paperback was May 2016 and the hardcover collection with all 12 issues was released December 2016.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 52: Kylo Ren Goes To Dagobah, Fights A Zillo Beast & Gets Marooned With Hux (Age Of Resistance Villains)

In this episode, Mike tackles the four one-shot Age Of Resistance Villain comics, all set before The Force Awakens, 3 of which feature Kylo Ren! Phasma leads an army in “Fallen Guns”, General Hux & Kylo Ren are stranded together in “Marooned”, Snoke takes Ren to the Dagobah cave in “Fail. Or Kill It” and in “Out Of The Shadow” Kylo Ren faces against a Zillo beast which Vader couldn’t defeat. Plus Mike gives additional information about each of the four villains!

These stories are all set between 28-34 ABY (before the sequel trilogy).

Please note this episode was originally released in April of 2021 on the feed of Comics In Motion.

All issues were written by Tom Taylor, with Leonard Kirk as penciller, Cory Hamscher as inker and Guru eFX as colour artist.

Phasma was the first villains comic released, in July 2019, with Kylo Ren’s being released September 2019, the trade paperback was released December 2019 and the hardcover featuring both heroes & villains was released September 2020. Imperial Experimentation, Romance & Hera Syndulla (Doctor Aphra #14-19) – Star Wars: Comics In Canon Ep 46

This episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon features the weirdest (& potentially the best) instalment of Doctor Aphra so far, where Aphra has been enslaved by the homicidal protocol droid Triple-Zero to assemble a crew to steal his lost memories from some of the most secure imperial archive facilities, causing further entanglement with imperial Magna Tolvan, the capture of rebel general Hera Syndulla, setting imperial experiments free and much more!

All 6 comics were written by Kieron Gillen & Simon Spurrier, with the artist Emilio Laiso and the colour artist Rachelle Rosenberg.

Please note this episode was originally released in February of 2021 on the feed of Comics In Motion.

The first issue of this arc, number 14 was released November 2017, issue 19 was out April 2018 and the trade paperback collection was out July 2018.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Ep 22: Chewbacca’s Family, Medal Of Bravery & Secret Mission

This week Mike talks about the 5-issue mini-series starring everyone’s favourite wookiee; Chewbacca! This episode covers Chewie’s time on Andelm 4 (just after A New Hope), details about his family, his “missing” medal from the end of A New Hope & sequel trilogy and more!

All 5 issues of Chewbacca were written by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto did the art, colouring and covers. Issue 1 was released October 2015, Issue 5 was released December 2015, the trade paperback was released March 2016 and the 3-series collection “Heroes For A New Hope” featuring the Princess Leia, Lando & Chewbacca comics was released in November 2016. Star Wars: Comics In Canon Ep 11: How Obi-Wan & Anakin Almost Left The Order Before The Clone Wars

In this episode of Star Wars: Comics In Canon, Mike delves into the five-part mini-series; Obi-Wan & Anakin which involves one of their first missions together, how Anakin almost left the order at 12 years old, Palpatine’s early involvement in Anakin’s life and more – all set three years after Phantom Menace (29 BBY) meaning Anakin had been training as a jedi for three years at this point!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon Special – Ep 1: Hello There, Canon/Legends & The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Hello there! Instead of a standard episode of Genuine Chit-Chat, this week Mike wanted to showcase his new show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon – found on the podcast feed of our friends at Comics In Motion!

This release is both episodes 0 & 1 rolled into one! Episode 0 is where Mike explains what you can expect from SW Comics In Canon going forward along with what “Canon/Legends” in SW is and the timeline of the movies, while episode 1 is about The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic and kyber crystal “bleeding” – this show is for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (we’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon, through the comic-book lens!

Regarding content discussed in Episode 1, for the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested but it’s not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.
