Free Comic Book Day High Republic Stories Explained: At The Republic Fair & Starlight Beacon, With Lula Talisola, Zeen Mrala, Ram Jomaram & More – (FCBD 2021 & 2023: Attack On The Republic Fair & Starlight Coda) – Ep 143

WHAT ARE THE FREE COMIC BOOK DAY HIGH REPUBLIC STORIES? In ep 143, Mike delves into the 2021 & 2023 Free Comic Book Day High Republic stories surrounding characters from the High Republic Adventures comics from Phase 1, primarily Lula Talisola. The 2021 story takes place just after the Race To Crashpoint Tower book while the 2023 story takes place after all issues of the phase 1 Adventures comics. Mike talks about these stories as well as Ram Jomaram, Zeen Mrala, Qort, Starlight Beacon, The Nihil and more!

Both stories were written by Daniel José Older, with Harvey Tolibao as artist. Rebcca Nalty was the colour artist for the 2021 story (Attack On The Republic Fair) and Michelle Madsen was colour artist for the 2023 story (Starlight Coda). FCBD21 was released in May 2021 and is in the trade paperback for volume 1 of The High Republic Adventures comics by IDW Publishing in February 2022, while FCBD23 was released August 2023. Both stories are within the THRA Phase 1 Omnibus, which was released in August 2023.

WHAT IS TURNING THE JEDI TO STONE? AN INVESTIGATION IS NEEDED! Ep 96 features Trail Of Shadows; one of the last pieces of High Republic material from Phase 1, Jedi investigator Emerick Caphtor & private investigator Sian Holt must work together to unravel the mystery of what the nihil possess that is calcifying jedi, which spirals out to a much larger conspiracy than either had ever imagined! As well as the story, Mike gives information on the Tarnab species, Doctor Uttersound & more.

Trail Of Shadows was written by Daniel José Older, with David Wachter as artist and Giada Marchisio as colour artist. Issue 1 was released October 2021, Issue 5 was released February 2022, with the trade paperback collection released April 2022.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – THR: The Hutt’s Deception, Friends Reunited & 5 Short Stories (High Republic Adventures [2021] Vol 2: #6-8 & Annual, Phase 1, Wave 1) – Ep 90

FARZALA & QORT HEAD TO THE HUTT HOMEWORLD WHILE THE NIHIL PREPARE TO ATTACK! For ep 90, it’s time for the second volume of High Republic Adventures comics, two padawans & an ancient jedi master head to Nal Hutta along with crew from The Vessel – this journey brings plenty of reflection and lessons learned. Plus after the events in Race To Crashpoint Tower, Zeen & Lula are reunited with their friends while Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana is attacked by the Nihil with only a single jedi there to defend! Plus Mike delves into the Parwan, Kyuzo and Rancor species all while giving plenty of connections to other content!

These High Republic comics are set in 231BBY, in the first phase & second wave of the High Republic. The High Republic Adventures 6 was released 21st July 2021, issue 8 was released 1st September 2021, the 2021 Annual was released 15th December 2021 and the trade paperback collection was released 22nd February 2022.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – THR: Race To Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older Review & Overview – Ram Jomaram, Lula Talisola & Zeen Mrala At The Valo Fair – The High Republic (Phase 1, Wave 2)

For this ep, Mike is doing another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era, continuing with the second wave (of the first phase) with Race To Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older – the junior novel which runs parallel to the “adult” novel, The Rising Storm, with a bunch of new and familiar characters!

In more detail, Mike gives information on the other releases for The High Republic (the first two waves within Phase 1), plus some background/plot information on the book and then delves into his spoiler-free review; providing information from the blurb & the themes, he then delves into the central characters in this book (as well as some who have appeared previously). Mike proceeds to talk about the way RTCT connects to The Rising Storm (with some mild TRS spoilers) and give some plot details from the first chapter or two of this book. Nearer the end Mike then explains RTCT’s plot (in brief) before giving his final thoughts and confirming what’s next for SWCIC!

Race To Crashpoint Tower was released June 29th 2021 and is by Daniel José Older. He has also written the Han & Lando book Last Shot and all of IDW Publishing’s High Republic Adventures comics plus the Trail Of Shadows mini-series.

Race To Crashpoint Tower is the junior novel of the second wave of the High Republic’s first phase along with the “adult” novel The Rising Storm and the YA book Out Of The Shadows, all set in 231BBY. Wave 3 (due early 2022) will include Claudia Gray’s “adult” novel The Fallen Star plus junior-novel Mission To Disaster by Justina Ireland and Daniel José Older’s young-adult novel Midnight Horizon.

From the first wave of phase 1 is Light Of The Jedi, A Test Of Courage & Into The Dark (232BBY), which Mike has reviewed on this show in 2021; LotJ was March, AToC was August and ItD was October.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – THR: Jedi & Nihil Parallel Stories, Lightsaber Forms & New Characters, Introducing Lula Talisola, Zeen Mrala, Young Yoda & More (High Republic Adventures [2020] Vol 1: #1-5, Phase 1, Wave 1) – Ep 86

TWO FRIENDS; ONE TAKEN BY NIHIL, ONE TAKEN BY JEDI – PARALLEL PLOT-LINES AFOOT! Mike starts episode 86 with some background information on The High Republic as well as Daniel José Older’s other Star Wars works, before delving into the first volume of High Republic Adventures comics! As well as confirming the plot of the comics, which detail padawan Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala’s respective journeys, Krix’s fall into the Nihil and more, including what a 664 year-old Yoda is up to! Mike also gives a summary on the 7 lightsaber forms for combat (between the 10 & 17 minute mark), and then throughout the episode talks about species including Chagrian, Mikkian, Zygerrian & more (including the mysterious Savrip) as well as many more connections these comics have to the rest of the Star Wars Universe!

These High Republic comics are set in 232BBY, in the first phase & first wave of the High Republic.

The High Republic Adventures 1 was released 3rd February 2021, issue 5 was released June 16th 2021 and the trade paperback collection was released November 16th 2021. Daniel José Older is the writer of these comics, with Harvey Tolibao as artist and Rebecca Nalty as the colour artist. Pow Rodrix also helped with the art on issues 2 & 5 and Manuel Bracchi also helped on issue 5.
