#212 – Is Phantom Menace That Bad? Fixing The Star Wars Prequels & Leading To Clone Wars Conversations With Dave, Maff & Megan

This week brings another Star Wars conversation, where Dave, Maff, Megan & Mike go back to 1999 with the first of the controversial Prequel Trilogy; The Phantom Menace! The episode serves as a soft lead into the Clone Wars animated series, which Dave, Maff & Mike will be delving into in 2024 – Maff hasn’t watched the prequel trilogy in many years, while Mike is a staunch defender, so tune in to hear; is Phantom Menace actually any good?

In more detail, the gang discuss their impressions of Phantom Menace from when they first watched them and how they felt about it after the recently rewatch. They highlight certain characters, namely Jar Jar Binks, Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, the political dialogue, how the movie was different from the original trilogy, things they believe could’ve been improved, elements that they enjoy and whether or not this film still deserves to be maligned even 24 years after release!

This week Mike talks with good friend & returning guest of the show; TJ Cummings! Last time she was on (Ep 2), they primarily discussed TJ’s travels around Asia but this time it’s a chat with a whole amalgamation of topics, flitting between several and having a laugh while doing so – this one is definitely for those wanting a fun chat that doesn’t touch on anything specific but has moments of clarity within!

**As mentioned in the intro, TJ says Vatican City has no age of consent, however upon further research, it appears it used to be 12, but is now 18**

This week Mike talks to Junior of We The Lifers, an alternative apparel company who’s goal is to keep people proud of being “alternative” and much more (discussed in this chat)!

As well as the above, Junior discusses why he started We The Lifers, what a “lifer” actually is as well as many other topics surrounding an alternative lifestyle including heavy music and people’s issues with “screamo”, how the stigma surrounding tattoos & piercings has changed over the years, what the alternative look is all about and how one gets treated differently because of it, why Junior moved over to England from Brazil in ’97,  enjoying what you like and not worrying about other people’s opinions and so much more – if you’re not a fan of heavy music this is still a great listen as it gives some perspective on the more aggressive side of music & subsequent culture without actually having to listen to any heavy bands!

Part 2 will be released next week, where the discussion on face tattoos continues, as well as controversial & drug tattoos, the dangers of fame, the questioning of racist jokes, collaborations, the Church of Satan and many more topics!

We The Lifers site – two t-shirts that Mike wears regularly can be found here which are pictured on the Instagram of Genuine Chit-Chat which will be with the post about this episode!

In case you missed it, last week Mike spoke with Dr Glenn Livingston, about his book “Never Binge Again”, along with the power of advertising in the food industry, how one can reprogram their own mind into eating better, how Glenn got into psychology & eating, the three brains; reptilian, mammalian & human and how they affect one’s perception of diet, how the world has been changing nutritionally with an influx of fast food but also health-awareness, opinions on fat-shaming and much more!

Remembering Dad – GCC #24: Father’s Day Special: Our Journey Through The Passing Of Our Father, Stephen Burton w/ Rob Burton

This week’s release is an especially emotional & important release for me (Mike). Today marks Father’s Day in the UK, so I wanted to release something about my father, Stephen Burton, who passed away in May of 2013 of oesophageal cancer.
This episode includes discussions of death of a family member and some details about their death, so please be warned of this sensitive content.
I am joined by my brother Rob (who is 17 years older than me) and we discuss how Dad raised each of us and how he was when he became older, followed by how we both found out about his cancer and how it affected him before his death. We then discuss his death itself and how it affected us and what to do moving forward.

As I state in the intro, this is a very meaningful & quite emotional episode for both myself & Rob but we wanted to show that it’s healthy to speak about these matters and if anyone is going through something similar and wishes to chat, I am more than happy to discuss any of these things in a completely confidential way. If you feel as though speaking about this would be helpful, please contact me in the social media links, or via email, below.
