#143 – The Man Who Draws Boba Fett: Variant Covers, Timescales & The Life Of A Comic Book Artist With Paolo Villanelli

Paolo Villanelli; Italian comic book artist responsible for drawing many of our favourite characters within the Bounty Hunters comics, Lando: Double Or Nothing and more, is who Mike spoke with this week about what it’s like to be in the profession!

In more detail, Paolo talks about how he got into the career of drawing comic books before talking about what it’s like being one, including timescales, his relationship to the comic writers, colour artists and editors, how much freedom Paolo gets when illustrating including panelling & layout and how drawing ongoing series is easier than one-off issues or mini-series. Paolo also talks about working digitally, how variant covers are commissioned and what he would love to draw & what he hates drawing. The conversation ends with Paolo talking about what he enjoys aside from drawing and some advice to up & coming comic artists!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon Special – Ep 1: Hello There, Canon/Legends & The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Hello there! Instead of a standard episode of Genuine Chit-Chat, this week Mike wanted to showcase his new show; Star Wars: Comics In Canon – found on the podcast feed of our friends at Comics In Motion!

This release is both episodes 0 & 1 rolled into one! Episode 0 is where Mike explains what you can expect from SW Comics In Canon going forward along with what “Canon/Legends” in SW is and the timeline of the movies, while episode 1 is about The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic and kyber crystal “bleeding” – this show is for all Star Wars fans; younglings & veterans alike! Whether you’ve consumed all the content (we’d be impressed if you have) or are just a film newbie getting into a galaxy far far away, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this look into the wider Star Wars canon, through the comic-book lens!

Regarding content discussed in Episode 1, for the best listening, ensure you’ve seen The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi, seeing The Rise Of Skywalker is suggested but it’s not essential and there will be no spoilers for it within – this comic series takes place around 6 years before the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens; so as TFA is 34 ABY, this comic mini-series is around 28 ABY (flashbacks between 18-25 ABY).

The Rise Of Kylo Ren is written by Charles Soule, with Will Sliney as the artist and Guru eFX as the colourist, issue #1 released December 2019 & issue #4 released March 2020.

If anyone has questions about Star Wars or the show in general, send Mike an email at StarWarsComicsInCanon@outlook.com.

Next week will be back to the usual GCC shows, so if you’re not into Star Wars, check in next week!

Chris & Dave of Comics In Motion were on episodes 63 & 75 of Genuine Chit-Chat and Mike was on episodes 75 & 100 of Comics In Motion!

In case you missed it, last week on GCC, Mike was joined by the powerhouse of hosts from the In The Black Podcast, their chat includes a great many topics, including “the talk” (not the birds & the bees) that black parents give to their children, they then discuss black identity, the importance of heritage, black history month, representation in the media, reparations, the future of Black America and much more, so check that out if you haven’t already!
