Star Wars: Comics In Canon – Return To Vader’s Castle: More Horror Stories; Tarkin’s Monster, B’omarr Monks, Baby Sarlaccs & More – Ep 103

IT’S TIME FOR MORE MONSTER STORIES! For ep 103, Mike is delving into the canon comics by IDW Publishing; Return To Vader’s Castle – 5 more horror stories with many familiar faces, character information & connections all perfect for any lover of horror & Star Wars! This episode includes Vader, Darth Maul, Asajj Ventress, Tarkin, Jabba The Hutt & B’omarr Monks, zombies, sarlaccs, Frankenstein-like monsters and a whole bunch of references & connections to Star Wars and horror movies!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in August 2022.

The continuous story is set somewhere in the original trilogy era (between 0ABY – 4ABY) and the other stories are all over the prequel & original trilogy era! The writer for these comics was Cavan Scott and Francesco Francavilla is the artist & colour artist for the continuous story. The guest artists are Megan Levens, Kelley Jones, Nick Brokenshire, Nicoletta Baldari & Charles Paul Wilson III and the guest colour artists are Charlie Kirchoff, Michelle Madsen, Nick Brokenshire, Nicoletta Baldari & David Garcia Cruz.

Issues 1-5 were released in October 2019, the trade paperback collection was released March 2020 and the hardcover collection of this & the previous collection; Tales Of Vaders Castle was released January 2021.

The first batch of Vader’s Castle stories was tackled in episode 76 of SWCIC. Mike delved into all four volumes of 2017 Vader in ep 62, 66, 70 & 74 of SWCIC. For the 2015 Vader run (set after A New Hope), check out episodes 15, 17, 19, 23 & 29 of SWCIC, for the 2020 run of Vader comics, check episodes 79 & 81 of SWCIC and check ep 41 for the Vader: Dark Visions anthology mini-series and ep 49 is the Target Vader mini-series.

Previously Mike released his review of Daniel José Older’s Last Shot novel and the week prior, in ep 102, Mike delved into the first full volume of Crimson Reign; centring around Qi’ra & Crimson Dawn as they try to topple the galactic empire by causing unrelenting chaos! In this episode Mike will take you through the story, as well as the four coinciding comics (Star Wars, Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra & Bounty Hunters), providing you with plenty of trivia, facts & knowledge along the way.

Star Wars: Comics In Canon – THR: Jedi & Nihil Parallel Stories, Lightsaber Forms & New Characters, Introducing Lula Talisola, Zeen Mrala, Young Yoda & More (High Republic Adventures [2020] Vol 1: #1-5, Phase 1, Wave 1) – Ep 86

TWO FRIENDS; ONE TAKEN BY NIHIL, ONE TAKEN BY JEDI – PARALLEL PLOT-LINES AFOOT! Mike starts episode 86 with some background information on The High Republic as well as Daniel José Older’s other Star Wars works, before delving into the first volume of High Republic Adventures comics! As well as confirming the plot of the comics, which detail padawan Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala’s respective journeys, Krix’s fall into the Nihil and more, including what a 664 year-old Yoda is up to! Mike also gives a summary on the 7 lightsaber forms for combat (between the 10 & 17 minute mark), and then throughout the episode talks about species including Chagrian, Mikkian, Zygerrian & more (including the mysterious Savrip) as well as many more connections these comics have to the rest of the Star Wars Universe!

These High Republic comics are set in 232BBY, in the first phase & first wave of the High Republic.

The High Republic Adventures 1 was released 3rd February 2021, issue 5 was released June 16th 2021 and the trade paperback collection was released November 16th 2021. Daniel José Older is the writer of these comics, with Harvey Tolibao as artist and Rebecca Nalty as the colour artist. Pow Rodrix also helped with the art on issues 2 & 5 and Manuel Bracchi also helped on issue 5.

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in January 2022.

Mike tackled the first volume of High Republic comics (by Cavan Scott) in episode 84 of SWCIC.

Mary Kenney: Senior Writer for Insomniac Games, Narrative Design Teacher at Indiana University, writer of several IDW Publishing comics and author of her own book Gamer Girls is this week’s guest, and her & Mike have a bunch to discuss!

In more detail, Mary confirms how she first got into video games and how she eventually became a writer of them. Mary also confirms some details of her time creating elements of Spider-Man: Miles Morales including how she landed the role, before delving into why she wrote Gamer Girls & what that experience was like, how the process for writing comics, books and video games differ, her experience in teaching and so much more is discussed in this uniquely informative look into the world of video games!
